Rebilas-Imagn Images NASCAR Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen sustained a fractured pelvis, broken leg and other serious injuries in a dirt race Monday night in his native Canada.
Friesen, 42, was involved in a multi-car crash in an event at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec, and is facing multiple surgeries.
He was alert and talking to track officials before being transported to a hospital and his wife, Jessica Friesen, said that CT scans showed no head, neck or spine injuries.
"Unfortunately he is still in a tremendous amount of pain," Jessica Friesen said in a statement Tuesday morning.
"Stewart has suffered an unstable/open-book pelvic fracture, meaning his pelvis is broken in two or more places, with a large hematoma on the area. He also has a fractured right leg. Both of these injuries will require surgery. Stewart was transferred to a larger hospital this morning for these procedures."
Video footage of the crash shows Friesen's vehicle veering toward the outer wall, flipping into the air and bursting into flames before being slammed into by another car attempting to avoid the wreckage.
Friesen is a four-time winner in his 200-race career in the NASCAR Truck Series, including a victory in Michigan on June 7 that qualified him for the upcoming playoffs.
